Environmental protection (referred to as environmental protection) is a serious problem caused by industrial development, which first attracted the attention of industrialized countries. It utilizes national laws, regulations, and public opinion to raise awareness and address pollution issues throughout society.
1. In 1962, American marine biologist Rachel Carson clearly described in her book "Silent Spring" the pollution and destructive effects of pesticide DDT on the environment. Due to the warning in the book, the US government began investigating the issue of highly toxic insecticides and established the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970. Various states also passed laws prohibiting the production and use of highly toxic insecticides. Due to this matter, the book is considered a landmark starting point for environmental ecology in the 20th century.
2. From June 5th to 16th, 1972, initiated by the United Nations, the First United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm, and the famous Declaration on the Human Environment was put forward, marking the beginning of the formal attention paid by governments around the world to environmental protection. The Chinese government also participated in this conference.
3. The environmental protection cause of the People's Republic of China also began in 1972. The Guanting Reservoir Protection Office was established in Beijing, and the Three Waste Treatment Office was established in Hebei Province to jointly study and treat the pollution of the Guanting Reservoir caused by the Shacheng Pesticide Factory located by the Guanting Reservoir in Hebei Province. This led to the promulgation of a law in China officially prohibiting the production and use of "DDT" nationwide.
4. In 1973, the Environmental Protection Office under the National Construction Commission was established, which was later changed to the ministerial level National Environmental Protection Administration directly under the State Council. In the 2008 Two Sessions, the State Environmental Protection Administration was upgraded to the "Environmental Protection Headquarters" and implemented unified supervision and management of environmental protection throughout the country.
5. Environmental protection bureaus (departments) have also been established in various provinces (cities, districts). And establish a hotline 12369 and an online 12369 center for the Environmental Protection Bureau to receive reports of environmental pollution incidents from the public.
